I just read an article talking about bots and botnet which really scared me a lot. It reminds me of a website (my friend sent the link to me) that sells some remote monitoring applications. They claim that there will be no trace at all once the application is installed in the target machine. It is absolutely invisible and even very experienced IT guy or windows experts can not find it (even no visible files ?!). Then all activities on the computer will be sent to a remote server. The master of the software can log onto the server from anywhere and monitor whether or not his or her loved one is cheating or steal someone’s secrets.
Whatever, I am just wondering how and why the Windows system, developed by the software giant, paid very often by millions of users, and patched almost every day, allows such things happen. I can not even imagine that if people start to use these softwares to monitor and steal from each others, what will happen. It must be the end of computer or internet usage.
I have been using windows system for over 12 years. I do appreciate all the efforts MS has done to improve the system regarding the usability and functionality. However, from windows 95, to 98, to xp, the only improvement I saw and care is the stability. I believe most of people who use windows, office and IE either everyday or just occasionally prefer to go back to win95 if all the security issues can be eliminated and they can keep at least some of their privacies.
Being a developer, though not a windows programmer, I always think, will it be that hard to stop bots, spywares and even virus by modifying the system? Windows will be more loved and adopted if it is more robust and secure but not just almost useless functionalities added.
