Is Microsoft SMS v.2.0 really domain ind

Our goal is to get software and hardware inventory on our 100 PCs.

In the “Is Microsoft’s SMS v.2.0 worth the wait? ” article, a note says that “SMS v.2.0 is not dependent on a Microsoft domain”.

Related documentation from Microsoft Press saysexplicitly that “A stand-alone Windows NT/2000 Server cannot run SMS, since it is not registered in a domain. Domain membership is necessary …”.

For some reasons we don’t want a domain.

    Can somebody help me?

    thanks

SMS requires either an NT domain or a Netware server to authenticate users(it does not need NDS).

SMS will NOT work in a workgroup setting.

You will need a Domain to use SMS 2.0. I remember reading that this is posible with a Linux-Samba approach but I don’t think it would be worth it.

There are much easier ways to run an inventory on 100 machines if that is all you need to do. Sneaker-net once or twice a year for instance.

Thanks…..Jeremy Wright (I am the only person I know certified in SMS 2.0 and I still think it sucks)
