Is My Processor Possessed?

By nikita2525 ·
Running Win98SE, IE5.5 with all available updates. Also have Callwave Internet Answering Machine. Whether surfing from site to site or going to net from inbox link, all of a sudden my skins disappear and the Icons turn black. The numbers 666 appear in different places and the background of my task bar turns white. The Callwave box is also scrambled like a tv on the fritz. I end up having to restart, or just shut down manually. What can "Exorcise" this problem? It's driving me nuts!!! And no,...it hasn't helped me win the lotto, yet. ;-)

Do you have a antivirus program? It sounds like you have a file infector on your computer. If you do have a virus protector try going to thier site and down loading the newest files and runing the virus scan on your system. Also try running scan disk and the defrag program.

Thanks so much. I hadn't updated my virus definitions since I got my puter. It had jumped from 758 know viruses to 42,000+. Problem hasn't reoccured since then. Knocking on my head first then wood,...it doesn't happen again.

Thanks for the advice.

My first suggestion is to try a GOOD antivirus package. The second is to see a good psychiatrist.

This is a virus. As I remember, you have to have a DOS disk to get rid of this one.
Do NOT use a Win95 or Win98 formatted disk.
Use DOS 5.0, 5A, or 6.22 for best results.
The reason you can not use a Win95 or Win98 formatted floppy is that, they access the hard drive during the floppy boot. At this point, you are done for. The virus loads itself into memory, as soon as the hard drive is read, for any reason.

Chris,

Must have been a virus of some sort. Since I've updated new virus definitions it hasn't happened again. Knock on wood for the meantime!

Thanks bunches,
Susan

What a virus. I have not seen this one before. I bet that CAI and Norton would like to take a look at it. Before you clean your system, email them. Describe waht you have and they will instruct you at how to send it to them for review. When youget ready to clean it out, use a boot disk from dos 6.22. Boot the machine. Copy the disk to your c:temp. Remember, this disk is probally now infected. Trash it, do not try to save it. format your drives, all of them. After formating, turn off the box. Unplug the power cord. Let it sit for at least five minutes. Now reset your (using the pins on the m/b)bios to boot or setup. Get a known good uninfected win98 boot disk and restart you machine with cd rom. Run your antivirus (dos) software, Reinstall your o/s. Good luck.
