Is somebody watching me???

By Karl Loewenstein ·
How do I determine if there is some sort of desktop software running (in the background?) that is watching my every move? I'm not concerned about my Internet usuage, only about what I'm doing locally (Word, Excel, etc).

I've got Windows 98 running at my desktop and I connect to a Win2000 server. I'm pretty paranoid and this issue is causing me extreme consternation and unrelenting headaches. Any advice would help. Thanks!

A while back I was asked by upper management to research just such programs to administer. Although we did not incorporate any, I found a few programs that can be installed and give the pc user no evidence of its existence. If your company has discovered as I did, and installed these programs, you will not know they are there. Some have the ability to record every keystroke you make and then secretly e-mail the results to any address desired.
Remember this, it is their building, equipment, connection, work, and you are paid for you time. A reputable company will have warned you to as what is appropiate usage on the computer. But they are given the right to monitor that usage by law.
Good Luck

Like answer number 1...the software is stealth. The user won't even know it's on their computer, but you may find a folder somewhere on your hard drive that may seem funny...like it doesn't belong anywhere and there's nothing in it or you can't open what is in there. You could check for stuff like that. I wouldn't worry about your bosses checking what you do. If you do your job well then you nothing to fear. One other thing, they could be using the information to find out who is slacking and WHO IS doing more work for the company. Maybe?

Good luck and no worry so much

Try loading zonealarm. It will report incoming and outgoing packets, and what software is doing the sending. I found some interesting things going on at my workplace.

Or look into Blackice too.

If the software is running from the server, disconnect from the server. If the software is running on your WIN98 machine, shouldn't it show up in Task List (ALT-CTRL-DELETE)?
Shut it down.

You could also run msconfig from the run command in the start menu and take a look at what programs are loading on startup-if the program truly is stealth it probably won't show up if you ctrl-alt-del but it may be listed here....just uncheck it in msconfig to disable it.
