Is the benefit from defragmenting noticable?

I have never properly defragmented my desktop computer. I was just wondering if it’s worth putting the time in and if the difference would be noticeable on a powerful pc like my own.

You don’t defragment a computer, you defragment a partition. So please tell more about your disks and partitions and what you use them for.

If it’s worth doing it, and you don’t have the time for it, start it before you go to bed and it will be ready when you wake up. That takes one minute of your time, what you surely have/

OP, does your computer use an SSD or HDD? SSD does not require defragmentation. If you have an HDD, let the built-in utilities automatically handle defragmentation. From my experience, defragmentation of HDD doesn’t have a noticeable effect. Keep in mind that this was enacted/enabled when memory was limited and expensive on HDD storage.

Yes, the benefit of defragmenting a hard drive can be noticeable, especially for older mechanical hard drives (HDDs). Defragmentation reorganizes fragmented data, which allows the drive to access files more efficiently. This can lead to faster file loading times and smoother system performance.

However, for modern solid-state drives (SSDs), defragmentation is not needed and offers no benefit, as they operate differently and data access is already fast regardless of file location. In fact, defragmenting an SSD can reduce its lifespan due to unnecessary write operations.

For HDD users, defragmenting is most beneficial when your drive is heavily fragmented or when you’ve been installing and uninstalling large programs frequently.

You mentioned you have an SSD not an HDD.

Agree per others, you never defragment an SSD, but you do need to TRIM it periodically to balance out and reduce wear.
It shouldn’t make a noticeable performance difference, depending on how much the drive needs to be trimmed, but will maintain longevity.

For Windows, search for “defragment” and run it.
Windows will recognize your drive is an SSD and TRIM it for you instead of defragmenting.

You don’t need to trim your SSD on Macs.
