Is the old school computer nerd endangered?

By JustinF ·
I've taken a look around my organisation at the sort of people now working in IT. For the most part they are trendy looking, iPhone using, EVO/WRX driving metrosexuals with gymn memberships and clean hair. Are IT Pros turning into Accountants? Just doing a day job and not living computers like the old school computer nerds?

Accountants are becoming IT pros, not the other way around.

That, and thanks to people that have barely the intelligence to be sucking oxygen being able to click on a little picture and get their computer to do their work for them, real computer skills are fading fast.

You can teach them, or you can give them a GUI. Your choice. B-)

Amen brother, preach it!

by JackOfAllTech In reply to Wrong

These people aren't computer nerds, they are intellectual sloths who managed to learn just enough to push pretty buttons. It's like the trained rats that learn which lever to push to get the food. They don't understand (or care) how or why it works, they just want the food.

Not Really

Some of these guys really know their stuff but once quitting time comes they're off to the gym in their Evo/WRX and not home to cold pizza and a house full of PCs with the cases open running every distro of Linux there is.

It's a bit sad to think that the pioneers of our trade wouldn't get to a second interview in the modern business climate.

CHOOSING to be active outside of tech

by jdclyde In reply to What, you mean

does not make you a non-geek.

learning that you can take a shower, or buy a nice shirt, does not make you a non-geek.

buying stylish glasses does not make you a non-geek.

Geek is who you are, not your fashion statement.

I have always been "geeked" about things while growing up, but have never been "nerdy".

Guess so...

Geek -a peculiar or otherwise odd person, especially one who is perceived to be overly obsessed with one or more things including those of intellectuality, electronics, etc.

Nerd - refers to a person who passionately pursues intellectual activities, esoteric knowledge, or other obscure interests rather than engaging in more social or popular activities.
