    Is there a simple way to recover encrypted Bitlocker drives?

    Locked

    by robertseal149 ·

    I mostly back up my computer data to a backup drive. I momentarily loaded info onto it, but I hope I deleted it. I appreciate your patience. Bitlocker safeguards it. While I was abroad, a housesitter hooked up an Android tablet to the backup drive’s port replicator. Oddly, they encouraged Android to “fix” the drive using exFAT. Android does not recognize NTFS or Bitlocker disks. She hadn’t attached it for long, so it wasn’t too deep. Data should be retrievable, correct?

      If I understand the situation your Bitlocker backup drive correctly, it’s like this;
      1. Android (wholly or partially) “fixed” the drive to exFAT (the operation was interrupted)
      2. After that, you copied some files to it, and deleted those later.

      I doubt if you can get your original data back and I’m rather sure it won’t be easy. Better contact a data recovery company.

      But since it’s only a backup drive, I assume you still have the data somewhere else, so you lost nothing. Just clean the drive, set it up again and copy the data again.
      If that’s not the case, it’s not a backup, but your only copy of the data. And then I’m afraid you lost them.

      Recovering Bitlocker can be tricky:

      1. Try Bitlocker Recovery Key: If you have your Bitlocker recovery key (saved online, printout etc.), use it to unlock the drive.
      2. Data Recovery Software (Risky): Data recovery software might work, but success depends on how much data was overwritten. It’s risky and not guaranteed.

      Finding your Bitlocker key is the best option.

      Since the volume is now damaged but the drive is fine.

      You can format it and regain use of said drive. If this was the last copy of information, that is lost so it’s a reminder that backup is more than a single copy of any file.

      Google 321 BACKUP to see how to safeguard your files. That is, BITLOCKER does not safeguard files.
