The usual reason for a slowish internet is your in house WiFi. So you should measure the speed while connected via an Ethernet cable. There are many sites to do that, see https://www.cnet.com/home/internet/best-speed-tests/ for suggestions.
Then compare that speed with the speed on the same location near the router on router via WiFI.
If both are slow, it could be related to the connection with your ISP. Then repeat the speed test with another device that’s fast everywhere else. A laptop from a friend will do. If that also is slow (compared with other locations like your friends own house) it’s the connection of the ISP or the hardware of your router.

Finally, it could be that you only pay for a slow internet connection. Then paying more for a faster connection can be a solution. What do you pay for (in Mbps download and upload) en what is the fastest you can get at your home?

I would reach out to your internet provider. There are not many things that you can do to increase your data connection speed on your computer, if anything at all. Is it one internet site or multiple sites? How old is your computer?

Sometimes the speed is fine but the response time has the owner asking for more speed.

Many ISP DNS are slow. (I’ll use common acronyms here.)

That can result in a little too long delay from when you click on a link to when the browser starts to show content.

As a test, try another DNS. Read how at https://support.apple.com/guide/mac-help/change-dns-settings-on-mac-mh14127/mac

      Try 8.8.8.8 and 1.1.1.1

Hi! Here are a few tips to help optimize your iMac’s internet settings:

Check your internet speed: Before making any changes, it’s a good idea to check your internet speed to get a baseline measurement. You can do this by running a speed test on a website such as speedtest.net.

Use a wired connection: If you’re using Wi-Fi, consider switching to a wired connection. Ethernet is generally faster and more stable than Wi-Fi, so using a wired connection could help boost your internet speed.

Check your network settings: Make sure your iMac is connected to the correct network and that the network settings are properly configured. Check the network settings in the System Preferences and make sure they match the settings provided by your internet service provider.

Update your software: Make sure your iMac is running the latest version of macOS and that all software updates have been installed. Updates often include bug fixes and performance improvements that can help improve internet speed.

Disable unnecessary network services: Some network services, such as Bluetooth and file sharing, can use bandwidth and slow down your internet speed. Consider disabling these services if you’re not using them.

Clear your cache and cookies: Clearing your cache and cookies can help improve internet speed by freeing up space on your computer and removing old data.

Use a different DNS server: Consider using a different DNS server to help speed up your internet connection. Google Public DNS and OpenDNS are two popular options.

I hope these tips help improve your internet speed on your iMac.
