Is Tivo worth it?

By mpd881 ·
I am just about to pull the trigger on a new Tivo system. With the box only $49, I almost have to. But I just read that Tivo might be struggling to compete with cable services etc, offering DVRs. So, am I wasting my time/money on this? Or is Tivo still a good service with some life left in it?

Get a TiVo

I have been a happy TiVo user since 2001. And even though I think it is cliche to say you'll never be able to imagine watching TV without one... you'll never be able to imagine watching TV without one.

I've tried other DVR software (from both cable boxes and apps for media PCs like Sage TV) and TiVo is, by far, the best. The interface is so easy to use.

I actually use the DirecTiVo (a DirecTV receiver and TiVo in one). By going this route, I only pay a $5 monthly fee versus the $13 standalone TiVo fee. Plus, DirecTiVos have 2 tuners, so you can watch a show while recording another (or record two different shows at the same time).

The advantage of standalone TiVos are that they have more features like TiVo to Go and integration with web services from Yahoo! and others.
