is Xp's antiviral and spyware enough or do I need other protection

By reciter ·
I have always bought protection for my computer, lately symantec systemworks and firewall. Also use Lavasoft adaware and spybot. I love systemworks....but I noticed that XP comes with its'own protection, is that sufficient or should I keep doing what I am doing

XP has no anti-viral or anti-spyware

by JamesRL In reply to is Xp's antiviral and sp ...

You can get from MS the Beta of Windows defender, an anti-spyware tool based on one from Giant. It doesn't work very well for me.

I haven't used Systemworks in years, it used to add so much overhead it turned my computer into a turtle.

Keep using Adaware and Spybot, and add an anti virus like Grisoft's Avg - they have a free version which works well.

Never too much

You cannot simply rely on the included XP tools. Keep doing what you are doing and get Spybot Search and Destroy(I like it because it does a good job and it is supported by voluntary donations only!) See thread #5 in Windows dicussions to see what can happen when relying on Windows alone for protection.

Correction to my reply D'oh

by FedererFan In reply to is Xp's antiviral and sp ...

I gave the wrong thread number, see thread #6 (currently, anyway :))

"My recent experience with a spyware/malware
infested XP SP2 laptop..."
The initial posting has a detailed list of 7 or 8 anti-mal/spyware removal programs with links and well written descriptions of the writers experiences with each product.
