The Govt. way, really stinks...

by fungus-among-us In reply to Is your IT budget bigger ...

speaking as a taxpayer that is.

I WISH we had an annual IT budget. We make our "requests", and if the budget can tolerate it, we can get what we want (after justifying it to the administrators).

The thing that really gets my goat is the WAY we procure things.

In the private sector... you have a budget. You are allowed to buy things that are needed as long as it is within your "budget".

In the Govt. sector... we are allocated X dollars to use for the fiscal year. Towards the end of that fiscal year, if you have not spent all the monies in your budget, the following year's budget will be reduced by that amount. So basically, when the end of the fiscal year rolls around, if we have not spent all of the monies allocated, there's a mad rush "to spend it all". Seems like an *** backwards thing to do... and as a taxpayer, I think it sucks.
