isass.exe - system failure

I have an optiplex and for the past two months or longer, I have been trying to figure out how to solve this problem.

I can't get into safemode, my computer does not recognize my disk drive, but recognizes the diskette drive. The system says the c: drive is clean. How can I get my computer back to running. I can't get into to anything it continues to boot

If you are getting a blue-screen-of-death when Windows tries to start, then the best step would be to boot from the XP CD and do a repair-install of Windows. This should replace any damaged files and get the system working without wiping out data or programs.

If you have priceless data that has not been backed up, then I would first boot the system with a free program like Clonezilla or Macrium Reflect and make a backup of the hard drive.

That may have helped you at some point.

Do the repair install as suggested by robodev. If you only have a recovery partition that will not do Repairs, but will only Reset to Factory Condition, do make sure you back up everything you need.

Actually, there are some viruses that call it that.

So it could be a virus that has installed itself incorrectly. Viruses exploit the fact that Windows uses helvetica font for everyhing, so a lower-case L, the number 1, or the letter I all look the same. Hence I've seen D1L files or DIL files in place of legitimate DLL files :)
