Hi there TR folks! Hoping to enlist the forums here for some help. I’m trying to evaluate if we need to build vs. buy an important tool for managing core internet and host assets.
I’m looking for some sort of database management tool for tracking the relationships of DNS hostnames to the internal and external IP addresses that they are associated with, as well as what physical machine they may live on, etc. Ideally it would have a lookup by any of those fields and show the relationships between them. While it would be awesome to have it automatically discover the things on the network, that would be a nice to have – we could enter the information manually during provisioning.
We could build this thing internally, and we will if we have to, but I can’t shake the feeling that this thing is out there someplace and we could just buy it.
We have a fairly complex network environment for our size; we have ~ 50 physical machines but a lot of IIS instances; a colocation data center where we host sites and applications for clients, as well as a pretty robust network for internal infrastructure, everything from file servers and exchange to virtualized servers for development. We’re primarily Microsoft based.
Any help to point me in the right direction would be super helpful!
