Isolated child domain

by beldin32 . Updated 23 years, 1 month ago

Basically the scenario is this. We had a parent/child domain structure. Our SQL system runs on the child domain. Just 2 domains

Through various problems (burglary/fire) we have lost the parent domain servers and backups. The child domain server was in a seperate area and was missed.

Now my problem comes in that I want to recreate the domain structure without having to reformat the child DC. I can recreate the parent domain with no real problems, however:

I cannot transfer FSMO roles: Schema Master or Domain Naming master to the child domain as the Admin of the child domain was not a member of the Enterprise Admins. Thus insufficient rights.

I have tried in NTDSUTIL to set the credentials to the old parent domain whilst connected to the child DC to no avail.

By the way this Child DC is a Global Catalog server for the domain.

What i need to be able to do is either remove all references to the old Parent and set the Child domain as its own seperate Forest/tree.

Or

Move the child domain into a new forest

Or

DCpromo the child domain (currently not possible as Parent domain is not contactable) and then recreate the child domain.

Any suggestions at resolving this issue please.

Thanks
