It all depends on intended purpose ...

The P4 1.7GHz would be comparable to an AMD Athlon 1.33GHz - not the Sempron 2500.

So, in terms of clock speed, the Sempron 2500 is the faster chip.

However the Sempron is a cut-down (restricted) version of the Athlon, usually intended for mobile applications.

Intel chips tend to be more robust for video applications.

They'll both require their own motherboards since the socket type is different.

Not much more to say really.

the front side bus and the caches are different. (For example Sempron has almost always only 333MHz FSB, P4 are in the majority of cases faster clocked.)Furthermore they have different energy-saving programs (AM Cool n'quiet, pentium: intel-Speed-Step Technology) and work with different voltages an different wattage.(P4 needs more Power)

I tend to trust these. This is just computations per second and as mentioned, it depends on your usage but this is generally accurate.
