IT Debate: Pay for skills or results?

by debate . Updated 25 years, 3 months ago

Many organizations are opting to pay for “hot skills”?specific expertise in a particularly needed area in the company. But this practice can open the door to many problems, such as defining which skills are hot and which aren’t. Because it’s becoming increasingly difficult to distinguish hot skills from the rest of IT abilities, Gartner recommends switching to a pay-for-performance system, where IT pros are rewarded for results rather than knowledge.

What do you think about the viability of paying for hot skills? If you eliminated paying for hot skills, do you think you would lose key technical staff members who are difficult to replace? Would eliminating hot-skills pay help improve morale even if you do risk replacing a few people? Do you think it’s time to end the practice of paying for hot skills? How do you think paying for performance is a better alternative? If you receive hot-skills pay, would you agree to accept a performance-based pay scale instead?
