Since many IT disciplines overlap, it’s difficult to completely isolate yourself to one without some of the others. My recommendation would be to learn as much as you can about much as you can. The IT job market is constantly in flux, and the more versatile you are the higher the likelihood is you’ll land a good job. Plus, in most small companies you’re very likely to be the bench tech, systems admin, webmaster, DBA, art department, telephony admin and, on occasion, lightbulb changer. Having a good basic knowledge of as many principles as possible gives you enough to understand what the problem or goal is and how to approach it. Then you can use Google and TR help fill in the knowledge gaps. It all comes down to being versatile and having the ability to adapt to a changing business model.
