you're Windows 7 sales pitch doesn't really fly. XP users aren't in any hurry to upgrade because nobody is ever in a hurry to move up and have to reload everything on a new box. The only reason the Win 7 sales numbers are big is because that's all you can buy anymore.. it's not by choice believe me.

Go Ubuntu

by robo_dev In reply to aww poor you

When the solid-state drive in my netbook went poof, I loaded Ubuntu Netbook Remix on the new drive.

Besides the fact that it was actually possible to load the OS from a USB jump drive, it just works.

Over the years I've gone back and forth, loading a Linux distro, only to get frustrated at some unsolvable problem, and then going back to Windows in a moment of weakness.

But Ubuntu just works.

Not to argue with the OP, but I bought a refurbed Dell netbook from the Dell outlet store with XP as the OS, so you still can buy XP if you want.

there are poor design issues not related to security as well, like using GNOME, and mounting all partitions even when explicitly told NOT TO MOUNT THEM.

then there is the **** brown colour scheme they picked.

Oh my, yes.

On all three counts.

I was never big on Ubuntu itself, but I like some of the derivative forks, like Mint. Because I sort of want Mint on a laptop, I was going to look for ways to **** away the very things you mention. (Default hideous color scheme not relevant twice over - not Ubuntu, and I change everything and use XFCE anyway.)

Haven't had the time yet, but I may, soon. Not exactly critical on a mostly-unused lappy, anyway.

er, edit: Thanks. I meant to say that. I did!

Poor little thread who has lost his way; baa, baa, baa

I suspect you meant to reply to the "How long will WXP linger?" discussion. You wanted the 'Reply' button at the bottom of the article, not the 'Start a Discussion' one at the top.

that will take care of that.

I plan to pickup a copy of Win7 to play around with, just to see what all the fuss is about.
