General discussion

I am new to this. I have installed windows xp, and now cannot access banking log in pages nor access many of web sites I previously were able to.
I have downloaded java several times and always errors after intalation begins and cannot finish. Also it says update?.. Im not updating a previously installed java. Is there a site that simple to download from and install?.. And what one do I install, and will it download automaticaly to where it should be? Since then I have re-installed windows xp pro and yet to install common programs I use but wont until java problem is rectified.

Where are you attempting to download JAVA from?

The correct site is:

Which version of XP do you have?

If you do not have a version that includes SP1 or SP2, you need to download and install either update prior to installing anything else.

Information in addition to Chas's response above.

Sometimes it helps to download entire file and then install rather than allowing an automatic installation.

Link to manual download site is:

Select "Offline Installation" version. Download and save, then run. It will install itself.

Click Instructions link by Download link on web page for more info.

While I certainly recommend running at least SP1 (foolish not to) and preferably SP2, Java should install on any version of XP.
