Javascript value refresh

By jim.schromm ·
I have some web pages with text fields. I validate the fields with a javascript by looking at the values. This worked in IE and Netscape browsers. I edited the pages and now it does not work in Netscape browsers. The netscape browser is looking at the loaded value of the field not the entered value. The only thing I edited on the pages was to remove a background gif and its height and width but I can't think of why that would cause a problem. ?

Javascript value refresh

by kevin.riggs In reply to Javascript value refresh

Jim,
In my experience with cross-browser designs, I find that 9 out of 10 times an error like this is because I have inadvertently left an apostrophe or quotation mark in an HTML tag.
IE has the ability to perform "tag completion"; meaning, it is pretty forgiving if you leave half a tag or leave an extra quotation mark (depending on where that tag/quotation mark is). As an example, create a form with no end form tag </form>. Try to open that document in IE. It should appear in any version of IE from 3.0 onward. That same document will not appear or will be visibly malformed in Navigator.

This is just my experience but I have had this experience several times over the last few years and since I hand edit, I'm more prone to leaving a single apostrophe or quotation mark than an editing program that cleans up after itself. :)

Hope this helps you,

Thanks. I cleaned up my quotes and I still had a problem. It turned out that if you leave the field box and click on an image (and the image called a validation function on the mouse down) Netscape did not process the field update. I switchedthe image to mouse up and Netscape processed the field update and then called the validation function.
