Jetadmin / Word 97 / Novell Problem

By YellowMan ·
1) Network with WIndows 95 workstations & Netware 4.1 or Microsoft client for Netware.
2) Problem occurs only on machines with HP JetAdmin
3) Error---> MDREXE caused an unexpected page fault in module HPDMIPX.HPA with a stack dump but I don't haveit currently.
4) Error occurs after initial log on to the network (about 5-10 seconds in)
5) If I un-install Jetadmin immediately after logon reboot and re-install the error ceases EXCEPT
6) On workstations with Office it seems to have affected something in that Word will hang only on starting from the toolbar. It'll start fine from the start menu.

ALL of these problems happened at once. Are they linked---what caused them and is there a fix.

I have an answer, but it's not a good one. I know, because I've used it and it works. You said you're getting page fault errors. That generally indicates a memory conflict on the PC. Two programs are trying to share memory resources. You've identified one as JetDirect. There really isn't a good way to tell what the other is. My sugesstion is, reformat and reinstall Win 95 (or 98 may be better). Then reinstall your apps. Start with JetDirect. You'll find that it works. If you suspect Office, load that next. If that works put everything else on. It could be something a user put on, or put on and then took off. I have a user getting similar messages, and a reformat and reload, while a boring process, will fix it faster than spending days of tinkering around with software. Hope that helps.

un-install & re-install of Jetadmin gets rid of the afore mentioned error. However, Word is still screwed. Even after an uninstall & re-install. It will only open if you select a particular document or template. I'm boosting the points on this to 1500 because this is an administrators pc & it has to be solved pronto.

Yes, your Word problem might be linked to templates. Try deleting the default templates and then reinstalling them. This does ring a bell in my head about Word starting up only under certain conditions.

If you have ie5.5 installed, try using the Windows Update utility to apply the "latest" patches for it. This will sometimes cure the problem. Also, make sure it is not an "A" revision of Windows 95.
Scan your registry for HPDMIPX and delete allinstances of it. Reinstall the IPX stack. After any/all of the above, try service packing the Office installation. Hope this helps.
