Job Search Quandry: Contracing Vs. Full

Hi All,

I'm in a technology-rich area of the country. I'm also considering putting myself back on the market (having studied the summer to get my MCSE and CCNA certs).

There's a good chance that I will move away from the area in the next year(family reasons). Should I keep that fact to myself and go for a full-time permanent position, or take a year as a contract consultant through a placement company? What the Pros and Cons of each? My wife is worried that I'd end up on 'the bench' but I don't see that happening here.

Contract:
Pro:
You are better paid. You can leave when the contract is up and the company is lousy.
Con:
You must leave when the contract is up though there's a possibility that they might extend the contract. No contract = no income.

Permanent:
Pro:
You can stay as long as you want unless you are not competent for the job and you hit the sack. Stable income though normally lower than contract based. Better career advancement as you are permanent to the company unlike a contract based.
Con:
Lower income.

Generally it's better to get a permanent job than a contract based. Contract is more for those hit and run jobs. Permanent is more for long time commitment where you don't see yourself from running from the company in the near future. Hope this brief thoughts of mine solve your problem.

If the area you are in is so "rich" in technology do the companies there need entry level people? No matter how much experience you have your certificates are very recent. After 20 years in networking I got an MCSE (etc.) and it was still hard to get a job at the right level. Read Nick Corcodillos book "Ask the Headhunter" and follow his advice. Sign up for his career advice here at Tech Republic. Make contacts, go after a position not a job, and keep your move (which could change in the futurefor numerous reasons) to yourself. Don't bet on the 'good-chance' (like your move) but work towards the sure thing. A job. Contract or permanent. And get it yourself. Placement companies aren't worth anything and are normally staffed by failed consultants. Your wife is right about that bench. Your certificates are only door openers. Get yourself in front of the hiring manager, not an HR person or recruiter, and let them decide if they want your initial offer to be a short term contract or permanent position. Offer to try a contract (if they seem hesitant) to 'try you out' but take permanent if the Hiring Manager wants to 'lock you in.' You can talk over moving later with your obviously career marketplace savy wife. Good Luck.

Hi Russo91,

Actually, I had some ideas when I read your question, however, the wisdom of the two wisepersons who sent answers # 1 and 2 have captured the essence of my thoughts. In that regards, I would like to second their opinions strongly. In addition, here are some more of mine:

We are suggesting solutions for you while we do not know any particulars about your situation or obligations, and we do not have to. Therefore, it is necessary to observe the following considerations and weighthem carefully.

If you have kids in school age, and you like the area you live in now, get a permanent job and settle. Work towards building a professional career path. Family reasons a year from now do change. What is of paramount importance nowmay seem trivial a little while later. Your concern and loyalty should be to your wife and kids first, then the rest of the family.

Also, make a pro and con matrix for your career priorities vs your social obligations and committments. If you canmake what is called a SWOT analysis. SWOT stands for Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats. I do not intend to make your case a philosophical question, but really it works. This is how business and economical studies examine a situation and deduce a decision. Look up a reference on the method or ask a friend who has a business development education/experience. He/she will help you out.

I hope this works for you, and you reach a decision which you'll never regret. Good luck.

All three of the other answers provide some excellent advice.

Another thing to consider if the possibility of you moving is really high and you know where you might be moving to is multi-location companies. Many even smaller US companies have offices in numerous cities. It might be that you can find a permanent position in a company located both where you are now and where you might be moving to.

If you are seriously more interested in consulting and have a good experience base then checkwith various consulting firms in your area. There are ones out there that don't do "hit and run" contracts that are more temporary, but have consultants that are more permanent employees and just hop from client to client as needed in the area they live. A lot of these consulting firms have offices in other cities or allow for remote consultants. Also some consulting firms (usually the bigger the more likely) have paid bench time. Something to ask them.

As the others said though any type of short term consulting contract can be pretty iffy as to what might happen at the end of the contract and with having a family that can cause unneeded personal problems as well. Just weigh all your options heavily before making a decision. Best of luck in your decision.

If you are young, need benefits such as medical, dental, and 401k plan, my advice is to look for a full-time job. If you are older, not not need to have hospitalization and other family-related fringes, go contracting. Higher fees are usually paidfor people with enormous wealth of background in may subjects related to your line of work.
