jpeg file association problem?

By ART23 ·
One of my technicians went to install a new HP Scanjet on an NT desktop and the pc performed a memory dump upon restart. The software was uninstalled and reinstalled again and it did the same thing. The software was uninstalled again and now upon logging in, there is a something in C:\Programs that fails to start resulting in all of the jpegs on the pc to be in a state where they can't be opened by doubleclicking on them. You have to go through a 3rd party software to view them, and the normal jpeg icon is now the windows non-associated file icon is there with it. Any ideas on what could be failing to start and if this is recoverable without doing a complete rebuild? Thanks in advance.

Try this
Double click on a .jpeg file. "Open with ..." dialog appears. Check 'Always use this program to open these files'. Pres 'Other ...' and locate IExplore.exe ( or 3rd party software you prefer ).
IE 6.0 is located in "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer". Click 'Open' then 'OK'. Now you can open .jpeg's with double click.
2nd and better way. Start your 3rd party software. It usually has 'Tools/Options' menu. Open it. There should be something like 'File associations'. Check .jpeg andanything else you want. Press OK. This must be enough.

The option of "Open With" is not offered. Even after associating the pictures in another software it is still showing up as no program associated with the jpeg.

This was one route that had not been taken yet, but it failed as well. It shows the correct program to open the jpeg with but it still will not allow you to open it by double-clicking on it and it still does not show an application association with it.

You may also need to reset the file association of the JPG type. goto CMD then use the ASSOC command on the folowing types:
.jpe=jpegfile
.jpeg=jpegfile
.jpg=jpegfile

EX: ASSOC .jpe=jpegfile

That will reset the EXTENSION for the correct file type.
