what would be the key hardware and software related features that a prospective network purchaser or manager should look for in an operating system?

Things that keep you up and running when business needs it. Raid is kind of a must in 1 form or another to keep things running even when there is failures, a good backup system one that you can and will rely on, Other than that enough disk space, ram to support it, and the operating system should be dependable as can be. I stilll believe in Netware products as the top of the line but there's getting to be plenty of support out there for Microsoft and Linux as well. I would still put a netware based server up against either and expect more from it but it all depends on what you're doing with the servers. Don't forget the UPS system to supply the power as that will save you just as much as the great backup system you bought.

1. The Server Architecture (Processor, Mother Board, Ram etc.)
2. The Bundled Server Software (It must be Synchronise with the Server Architecture)
3. The Network cards and Ports
4. The Raid Technology & the Hard Disk Space
5. Backup Technology
6. The Customer Support (both Hardware & Software) form the Vendor
7. The Power Backup
