Keyboard/mouse not working in Windows

By E Chill ·
I am running Win2000 Pro and the other day, suddenly, my keyboard and mouse stopped
working. They work in the boot-up mode (tested because I tried to repair the Win installation) and also
work under a CD-run version of Linux. So I think it must be something with Windows.
The problem is I can't get either to work so I can't get in and change anything not even in VGA or safe mode.
Yes, I tried other keyboards and mice too. They are both PS/2 connected.

When you say that you tried other Keyboard and mouse, does that mean that they did or did not worked? I They did not, then the first thing I would try was a usb keyboard and mouse.

The "other" keyboard and mouse had the same effect as the "original" keyboard and mouse. ie...I am not getting a keyborad error or no keyboard present on boot up, just when Windows loads. Since both sets of keyboard/mouse work within the bootup period and within Knoppix, I do not think it is hardware related at all. The question is, how do I fix this windows problem? I tried to "repair" my installation and do not want to have to format and re-install as that would be greatly heinous. I tried to re-install windows but I need to not have all my files erased when doing so.

you can actually re-install windows without deleting any of your files.

Setup windows, install as usual and choose to repair.

I did try to "repair" and nothing works.
I would have already re-installed windows but when I do the
setup screen tells me that I will lose all data.
For expediency, (I need this machine to perform for a party in two days), It would be difficult and time consuming to transfer off all my files, then back on after re-installing "cleanly",

i never heard of this one.
i would boot in Safe mode then go to device manager and remove the presumaably banged entries for the ps2 devices. then reboot so windows can refind the hardware and reload the drivers and see if reloading the drivers might fix it.
maybe consider hunting up latest mboard drivers and bios just as good practice...
maybe some device is conflicting. what have you added lately?

Yeah, the old, what have you done lately? Nothing is the answer. I had a stable and together machine for a long time and nothing new either in hardware or softwares for a while now.
I just came home to an unresponsive keyboard and mouse.
Thus, I am not able to log in to be able to do any re-mucking up of the mouse/keyboard drivers. As far as bios and mboard, same problem, cannot get in to do anything.

I'm with Sarge on this one. Has all the earmaks of a driver issue. If so, keyboard and mouse will work when you boot into safe mode. Then you can remove and reinstall drivers.

I tried a USB mouse -- It works!! However, USB Keyboard does not.
Safe mode still wants me to log in so I am stuck.
