Labeling clients computer

By kashmeir63 ·
Hi,
I'm looking for techniques on how to keep track of client's computers. As far as location,o.s. etc. Also labeling the computers. Does anyone have a good method for doing this? I would prefer not to buy any 3rd party software to do this. Any advice would be appreciated. Thank You.

Well, you could create a system profile using one of the free-ware system information managers:

As far as labels, use a P-Touch or other small labeler and placethe label in an inconspicuous location on the rear panel and inside the case.

Then, have a custom sticker made for your business and place a few in discreet locations on the PC.

If you build up the PCs from scratch, consider having a custom case badge designed.

For keeping track of who has what and where it is, you could try an Excel spreadsheet, or, better yet, an Access database. Using Access is good because you can build on it over time. You can start out simple and add fields for things that come up in the future. If you are not familiar with Access, you can either check with your programmers or even take a class at a local college or computer store. It may seem a hassle now, but in the long run you'll be glad you did it. You can even keep inventory of other equipment like routers, switches, and printers. As for labels, you could try Word. Use the Letters and Mailings option from the
Tools menu to create labels and print them on popular brands of labels you can buy at any supply store.

I wrote a simple table out in Access. Then later down the road I wrote a Help desk and moved all the info into an SQL dB. But, within this Access I could see the location (i.e., facility or department). Excel is good, but I found access better because I could build reports around it, and obviously later upgrade to a nice Help desk. As far as labeling... I used to use a P Touch, and label the serial # on the front of the machine. This way, I could see the serial (which I used as the main identifier in Access) very easy and look up the machine without moving cables and junk. My opinion tho!
