Lan and Internet speed problem

By Manish Khanna ·
i have 5 machines(win system) that are directly connected to router ports which in turn is connected to a high speed internet line. This was a requirement so as to provide these machines max bandwidth but this has lead to a significant reduction in lan data transfer speed. how does i manage to get max internet and lan speed. one way i thought was to connect 5 machine to a lan-switch and that switch to the router.

U r right. In doing so, it will ease the internet traffic on the network. It will also sepreate the internet traffic and the Lan traffic.
I wld also suggest u 2 chk whether any of the user is using any internet sharing software like Morpheus & kazzaas these results into a lot of network traffic.
So, a lan switch wld suffice ur purpose

P.S: do not use a Hub.

Your idea on using a switch is right-on. The reason you see the delay in data transfer between stations is that each ethernet port is considered a separate network. Every communication between two systems must be reviewed and transferred by the router. Your switch on the other hand would place all 5 machines on the same network. The router never sees the traffic because the switch recognizes that the data is going to another device on the switch and so it arranges a connection across its switching fabric without additional processing. You can find small 100 Mbps, full-duplex switches fairly cheaply from NetGear or Linksys.

You may even see a small improvement in your internet performance because the router will only be processing traffic to and from the internet. Best wishes,
