I have a serious problem with my sister’s laptop. Our home LAN worked fine for a year. The system is set up as an SMC router with direct connection to my computer and a wireless connection to my sister’s laptop. Both systems have WinXP Home SP2. Both have AVG Antivirus and Adaware anti-spyware software regularly updated and launched.
A week ago the laptop started to work funny: at turning off windows encountered a serious problem and crashed, at startup it launched checkdrive but found no errors. I launched lots of antiviruses and anti-malwares, found that the laptop was infected by a “downloader” virus or something alike, i cleaned it, and downloaded all the windows-related upgrades. The error vanished and the laptop worked for 4 days.
Then a new error occured: I ‘ve let my sister work on the machine.
The windows firewall showed a warning that it’s switched off. I can’t access Internet from the laptop although I have no problems using the other computer. It seems as if I didn’t have a LAN if I check it from my sister’s laptop, although the wireless connection is online according to its tray icon.
I tried to launch Windows Firewall, but an error message appeared that Win Firewall/ICS cannot be launched. I tried it through Start/Settings/Control Panel/Administrative Tools, resulting in the same error with a message that the launch was stopped because “file not found” (no exact filename specified). I tried lots of new anti-malwares and cleaned some other (not yet cleaned) malwares. Nothing changed. I tried to reinstall SP2, nothing changed. I deinstalled and reinstalled ICS but at reinstalling it says RIP didn’t start in time, though install will complete and after restarting the service everything should work. I tried to reinstall it several times, but it didn’t help. It also did not work after reboots. I deinstalled and reinstalled the wireless connection device but it didn’t help. I’ve found a system error log in that an error was registered as the initial error after launching Internet Explorer: “TCP/IP protocol could not be started.” Something is missing for that. Now I’m stuck.
Can anybody help me?
