LAN connection problem

By anseris ·
The network server is running Windows 2000, but most computers are using Windows 98, and mine uses XP Professional. I can connect to the Proxy server, but not to the application servers, and not to most other computers. The servers and other computers show up on My Network Places. I can see folders and printers on other computers, but when I try to access them, nothing happens ? the computer tries to connect (Windows logo waves) but doesn?t get anywhere. If a password is required, the ?Connect to [computer name]? dialog doesn?t close when OK is clicked.

Where do I start to track down the problem? Excuse me if I'm missing something obvious - my field is application software, but since I signed up for this job the scope of it has expandedalarmingly. There is a network admin guy here but he doesn?t know how to help me with this one.

My first thought would be to make sure you have the proper permissions to access everything. A lot of times, that is what the problem is. You would have to check with the person who sets up user accounts. If you need any other help feel free to email me.
