Laptop 2 PC with wireless router

By alex ·
Components:
1 wireless laptop
1 PC
1 Belkin ADSL modem with built in wireless router

At present the PC and Wireless laptop both connect to the internet ok using the wireless router. What i want to do now is allow the laptop and computer to share files etc. I have been trying to do this using the windows wizards, network places etc. I haven't had any luck. How do i get them to share files???

Alex, there is no one line simple answer for you.
Here are a couple of things to look at/for.
Are you using static IPs or DHCP from the router??
Can the computers ping one another?? ie; they must be on the same subnet.
They need to be members of the same "workgroup."
Once you have established connectivity you can share the folders, right click > sharing.
Beware of security issuses. esp with wireless you are broadcasting your shares/data.
Read up on creating/using groups and accounts and assigning only those access to your shares.
Hope this helps a little.

Assuming you are using XP or 2000 on both PCs.

First thing to check is whether NetBIOS over TCP/IP is enabled for network adapters used.

Right click on adapter in Network Connections and select Properties. Under General tab, click Interner Protocol (TCP/IP), then Properties, then Advanced (under General), then WINS tab. Check "Enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP."

If NetBIOS over TCP/IP is not enabled, you will not be able to see other PCs in a workgroup.

Also check Windows firewall (or any other installed firewall) settings.

Information provided by ronkw in first response will help if you still cannot access PCs.

There are many different situations and depending which one you have will determine your setup. Here's a couple of links that will walk you through setting up your network depending on your circumstances:

Post back if you have any more questions.

Cheers.

Everyone here is correct depending on the OS of the laptop and
desktop.

First, I will assume that the suggestions from RonKW are all
going to test out fine because if you are behind the router and
can get both PC's to the internet then they are both using the
router as a gateway. that means they are most likely on the
same subnet. They do not have to be in the same workgroup,
but it makes browsing easier.

Go through the stuff willcomp said and RW links should help a
lot too.

Lets assume you can ping from 1 PC to the other. Also let
assume that you are in win2000 and/or XP.

Make sure that each PC has a user account with identical names
and passwords. That way when one connects to the other it will
think it is a valid local account.

Make sure you have a folder shared on each PC with permissions
given that include that user. Do not share a drive with a
predictable name like sharing the C: drive as C. Virus' and
hackers will look for those default names. Also I suggest
password protecting any shares. Also, troubleshooting will be
easier if the share name does not have any spaces.

Same goes for the machine name... no spaces.

Now see if you can open a share. If the info is not in My Network
Places that may be normal. That is just a GUI for the browse list
and can take time to become updated. Try choosing:

Start menu --> Run

In the run box type:

\\NameOfOtherMachine\ShareName

where NameOfOtherMachine = The other pc name and
ShareName is name of the shared folder on that machine.

That should do it. If not use RonKW's testing tips with ping etc.

Good Luck,

razz

The pcmag article provided step-by-step instructions to set up a wired/wireless network. Did you follow the istructions? Does the network function properly? Another option for you would be to locate a local computer shop and have them setup/assist you in your endeavor.

Cheers.
