laptop based mobile phone surfing

You need the data adaptor for your model of phone! GSM phones and GPRS phones do not use analogue signals like traditional landline modems so there isn't a standard adaptor ftom RJ11(or BT plug) to 'mobile phone'. Most mobile adaptors use a PCMCIA card with a moulded on cable with a connector specific to the model of mobile. They are sold by the phone manufacturers so try their web-sites.

Remember, the maximum data rate on GSM is 9600 baud and on GPRS is 14400 baud, so it IS doable, but painfully slow and therefore very expensive!
