(Laptop: Compaq Evo N1000C) Video is rarely visible on screen

Plastic cover frame of the screen of my laptop was cracked. So, after ordering just that part from ebay, I changed it to a new one by myself disassembling the screen part. But after this work, **video is rarely visible on screen** even though the computer still has power on. I brought my lapton to the local laptop repair shop. They told me first that it is likely that the inverter or back-light on screen could be problem. After several days, I heard from them that the video card was a cause and motherboard needs to be changed.

My questions are
1. How is motherboard broken? I worked on just change in the plastic frame of the screen disassembling the screen part.

2. Can I change just video card not motherboard? Why do I need to change motherborad instead of just video card?

3. If the motherboard is changed, are there any other parts to be changed together with motherboard?

4. Can I save the data of my files in my computer if I have to change motherboard?

Please give me some advices on this issue.

Thank you.
