Laptop Constantly Slowing Down

By Chilli_Willie ·
I have a laptop thats about a year old, HP Pavilion with an Intel 2g Centrino Duo processor, 2g memory. Running windows xp media center.

I have all the proper antivirus software and my system is constantly slowing down.

What can I do before I just get rid of it and start over.

It's just Software slowing down your computer. Here's a few things you can try.
1) Run a anti-spyware program.
2) Defragment your computer.
3) Type 'chkdsk /r' in the command prompt and run it (restart required).
4) If it's still slow, back-up all your data, get the OS disk, driver disk and all your application disks and do a format and reinstall of the Operating System.

This solves slow system problems over 90% of the time. If it is still slow after that, then yeah, something in the laptop is broke lol. But I can almost guarantee that a back-up/format/reinstall will work no prob.

Vista??

well I did everything except format and start over. What would you think about an upgrade to Vista Ultimate instead? Actually I would purchase the complete version and install it.

I have a one year old Pavillion laptop running XP. I did finally have to format and start fresh. Then the DVD drive went out. Then the wireless went out. I'm planning to purchase another computer. Don't know yet if I will even bother to fix this one as HP can't seem to decide if I am still under warranty- they say that the warranty period was only 90 days.

And incidentally, I had to do a format re-install three different times. I finally bought a Western Digital My Book external HDD and put all my stuff there. It at least took SOME of the pain out of having to scratch the system and restart.

Good luck to you!

I have an HP Pavilion that was doing the same...

The battery was shot. I pulled it and run now without it and speed is back where it should be. Try running without the battery, if things speed up, clean the contacts and/or replace the battery.
