If you have not added any new programs then it may be caused by application drivers that need to be updated,check the video driver to update it. Have you had any other problems that you have noticed,run scan disk for any errors on the hard drive,also check the memory to make sure it is okay and it is sufficient to run applications.
Remember too, that a dial-up connection to AOL will be slower than any other kind of connection. Are you dialing using a modem? And what bps (bytes per second) are you connecting with?
AOL could also be swamped depending on what time you are connecting and whether it's a busy time for them too.
