Laptop freezes on battery power

Hi does it freeze instantly or at any specific time. It might be that the battery has a cell gone down which will not show on the battery meter but will probably cause it to freeze, beg borrow steal a battery to try.

Hope this helps

I would try going into the control panel and disable all power management and set the times to never. Also most BIOS have and entry to disable power managment. This is not an uncommon problem with APM

The most common cause of this problem is that your system has an older BIOS that is not ACPI compliant. HP's support page often has BIOS updates for Win2k power management compatibility.

One dead giveaway for this problem will be in Event Viewer(Control Panel/ Administrative Tools) in the system log. I don't rememeber the name of the service offhand, but there will be a persistent error about a HP service not being able to load, every time you boot up. The error won't pop up; you have tolook in event viewer.

If it IS the BIOS, you can try to upgrade and see if that helps, but we invariably end up reloading systems. In our experience, you must have the ACPI BIOS on before you can load Win2k.
