Laptops

Question

Laptop freezes when watching youtube/netflix etc. Or playing video games.

By Speakerbox ·
Hi all,

I Bought a second hand Metabox Laptop off Ebay, which worked perfectly for several months to a year.

Now it has an issue which keeps happening every time I use the laptop, it predominantly seems to happen when I'm watching Video content through YouTube/Netflix etc. Or playing video games.

The Issue is the screen freezes, including the mouse icon on screen, as does the sound. It will stay frozen until I switch the Laptop off with the power button, then turn it back, wait until it boots, then it goes as normal, this can happen several times within 1 hour.

For some reason the Laptop has never frozen when I've been playing Pillars Of Eternity (which may not be as demanding as other more modern games on hardware?), but freezes during other games.

Specs are:
Processor: Intel(r) Core(TM) i7-7700HQ CPU @2.80GHz
Installed RAM: 16.0 GB (15.9 GB Usable)
System type: 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor
GPU: NIVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050

Does anyone have any idea what is causing this issue, and how to remedy it?

It's either hardware of software. I'd start with checking the vents and the heat paste on the CPU and PSU. Also set the BIOS to safe defaults, or whatever that's called. No overclocking.

If that's all fine and it still happens, it's either some hardware thing that can't be repaired in a laptop (the motherboard), some hardware that can be replaced in principle (a separate videocard) or software. To test the software, temporarily replace the built-in HDD or SDD, install Windows 10 and all drivers on the replacement and see what happens.

Thanks for your reply, I intend to try disabling the Hardware acceleration function first, within Chrome.

Still plagued by freezes

I guess my next move will be to open up the laptop, and look inside

If it was just Youtube/Netflix.

I'd say it's our old issue about Web browsers and Hardware Acceleration. You omitted which browser so I'll give a link to how to turn that off for Chrome:
https://www.howtogeek.com/412738/how-to-turn-hardware-acceleration-on-and-off-in-chrome/

But you mentioned games so while it's possible it's software the chance it's a hardware issue went up with that mention. https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/2601050 and hundreds of other posts tell me it could be why it was for sale on Ebay. Arrange with the maker to rectify this laptop either with a clean install or replacing what hardware that needs replacing.

Thanks so much for you're assistance, I've disabled the Hardware Acceleration as per instructions. I'll see how it goes, and reply with another message if it was in fact that, which caused the issue.

Have you run anti-malware and cleared registry errors?
