Laptop Hard Drive – Permission Issue

    Locked

    by gilbertcech ·

    Greetings,

I recently dropped my laptop but managed to salvage the HDD. I bought an enclosure and now I am trying to access my files via my PC. When I try to access ‘My Documents’ it tells me to bugger off…”Access Denied”.

I have googled the issue and found many similar problems on various tech threads, however the common solution seems to be to changing the security settings on the folder via properties. However I am using XP Home and as such I don’t see a security tab when I enter properties.

Does anyone have an idea as to how I can get access to this folder ?

    Appreciate any help in advance…

    Cheers,

    Gil

Thanks but I already have followed that link. As I said in my original question, I am running XP Home, Not XP Pro, so I don’t have a security tab when I access folder properties.

        Thanks Anyway !

Are you logging in with Admin privileges?

I’ve just dragged a Customers computer out with Home on it and I didn’t have an issue taking ownership of the files by following those directions.

They are for XP all of it including XP Home. Media Center and Pro versions.

However if you have a Limited Account you will never be able to do anything to get at these files. You need to use an Account with Administrator Privileges.

I copied this from the link OH Smeg provided you….

Note You must be logged on to the computer with an account that has administrative credentials. If you are running Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, you must start the computer in safe mode, and then log on with an account that has Administrative rights to have access to the Security tab.

Are you using the same username and password combnation on the current PC as what is on the laptop drive? It would also help if your usning the same admin username and password that was used on the laptop drive.
