Laptop in a high explosive environment

    Locked

    by norm.latino ·

I would like to put a laptop in a ballistic range type environment and am concerned about the static electricity discharge. In this environment the same person that would be using the laptop would be loading their own rounds as well. What can be done to “static-proof” a laptop in this type of environment?

IMO, your best bet would be to ground the user rather than the laptop – the user would be more likely to build up a static charge.

The easiest way to ground the user is with a wrist strap; this same solution is used by PC technicians, and offers a high degree of mobility. There are many products on the market – you should be able to find one at your nearest computer or office supply store.

Make it part of the Standard Operating Procedure: put the strap on *before* touching the laptop or rounds.

You could use a grounding strap with the laptop as well, if you want an extra safety measure.

      Hope this helps…

I have had a similar experience putting PC’s in an explosive environment, aviation fuel & weapon stores! I advised a metal cased laptop such as the Thinkpad placed on an earthed maintenance anti static mat with a touch button for the operator to release static build up with his movements. The environment was tested for static and show nil and the place is still standing so I assume that it works.
Make sure that the testing is done by soeone you don’t like and is heavily insured.
