Laptop keyboard/touchpad dont work

By replaceddoor ·
Hi,

I had just used system restore on XP home. The laptop booted up to the screen telling me that the restoration was a success. I went to click on the 'OK' buton but realised that the mouse pointer was gone!

All the buttons on the keyboard have stopped responding, and the the touchpad pointer has disappeared. I plugged in a usb mouse but it didnt work either.

The keyboard works fine in BIOS so its not a hardware problem. I also rebooted in safe mode but the keyboard/touchpad/usb mouse still dont work.

please help!
thanks

Sounds as if there are no drivers loaded for the Keyboard or Touch pad. If you have not already saved your data you'll need to remove the HDD and put it in a USB Caddy and save your data then wipe the HDD and do a complete reinstall from a Blank CD with either the Restore CD that came with the NB or an OEM Cd as it will have default drivers for these items. After you have it working again you'll need to log onto the makers Web Site and download the latest Drivers and install them for everything in the NB.

Have you tried a PS/2 mouse and keyboard? I've run a Restore CD on a desktop and had a USB mouse and KB not work when PS/2 devices did.

Thank you Hal and NeverBusted for your answers.
I bought a $20 usb keyboard and was able to use it to undo the dodgy system restore. Turns out the drivers for the inbuilt keyboard and touchpad were not working for some reason. Thanks again :)
