    laptop keys dont work

    Locked

    by gbuckler11 ·

    Hi-
I have a dell laptop running win98 and I turned it on yesterday and the keys no longer work. Not even caps lock, ctrl, alt, delete…nothing. But the touchpad does work. Any Ideas??
    Thanks

It could be a couple of things, did you bump the laptop? It could be that the flat cable that connects the keyboard to the main board is lose, but the touch pad is connected to the same cable. Try a reload of windows, it will not delete any thing and will replace any corrupt drivers. Have you tried an external keyboard and are you handy with your laptop? I have the Dell break downs for most laptops, they show you what screws to remove from the laptop to replace or repair every thing.

      Can you get into BIOS?

If so go down to your local newsagent and buy a Linux Mag with a Copy of a Live Linux as a Cover Disc and boot off that. If the keyboard now works you have a driver issue with 98 and if it doesn’t work you most likely have a M’Board in the NB that has killed off the Keyboard Interface. You can try adding a conventional PS2 Keyboard and see if that works but honestly the fastest way to fault find is to use a Live Linux as if it works properly with that you have immediately ruled out a Hardware Problem and if it doesn’t work you know that you have a Hardware Problem.

It’s pointless attempting to mess around wasting time and effort trying to fix a software problem that doesn’t exist.

      Col
