Laptop Management Tools

By ssandstrom ·

I am the technology director for a new private high school where each student has a laptop connected to our wireless campus.

As we grow (currently at 250 students... a.k.a. laptop clients), I am looking for some affordable, helpful desktop management tools for managing software patches, tracking changes (registry, etc.), application deployment, etc.

Environment is 99% Windows 2k3 servers, 1% Linux servers, and all clients are XP Professional.

Any advise would be helpful.

AB Tutor is good

by martin.gauss In reply to Laptop Management Tools

I use AB Tutor to control the student desktop computers (PC's running XP Pro). Works well even on a peer to peer network. You can view a single or multiple student desktops, show a demo to the whole class or just a select few, lock donw offending computers, display messages, chat, and more. Costs less than #300 and no per seat fees for networks. Claims to work over the internet too, but I haven't verified this.

Try self-service software distribution

You should AppStream to let users install applications from a central server however run the application locally. It gives you full control as well as flexibility. There are several nice features that are particularly useful for schools, labs etc, where you can automatically harvest licenses back after a certain period of time (when the school is over or a particular course is finished etc.,).

You should take a look at

Good luck.

You should take a look at Empirum by matrix42. They have a really good solution for everything you described. I think they even have installs at Private Schools doing the same laptop program that you are.
