Laptop OS installation

By Scotty J ·
I need to reinstall windows on a formatted laptop. My problem is that the CD drive is external and there are no drivers currently on the laptop to recognize my CD. The laptop is a 2 year old Sony Vaio. Any ideas on what I can do?

The vendor should have dos drivers on their website. I'm not sure what brand of drive you have.

It is a Sony Vaio PCG-505. Sony does not have a dos driver on their site that works. The dos driver they have requires windows to be installed.

What happens if you use a win98 bootdisk. That might load the driver for your cdrom.
If you dont have one try at bootdisk.com.

I'm currently rebuilding a crashed IBM Thinkpad for a friend, and the boot disk provided by IBM offers the option to install CD-ROM support. Perhaps your Sony disk does, too. If not, you need to locate a copy of MSCDEX.EXE along with the proper driver for your CD-ROM drive. You can then copy these files from a floppy disk to your hard drive, and edit your Config.sys and Autoexec.bat files to install them.

You're on your own for the specific driver - try the Sony website - but if you need a copy of MSCDEX.EXE, I'll send you one via email - r.wright@computer.org

With the Sony VIAO the only way I was able to get it to work was through Sony. It uses a Sony bootdisk on the Cd that contains the operating system and the proprietary drivers for the drive.

I concur with answer 5. I have had to contact Sony for a new bootdisk. They are VERY proprietary.
