Laptop user using multiple Proxy Servers

By jaybrdie ·
I currently have a WAN consisting of 5 offices running W2k Server with Proxy Server 2.0. We have several laptop users running Win98 or W2k Pro that travel from office to office and log into the network to access the Internet through the Proxy Server. The problem I am having is that The Proxy Servers at each location have a different computer name and IP address. Since Proxy likes to use these two to give access to the Clients I run into the problem of roaming users on laptops needing to reconfigure the Proxy Client to use the Internet. Any ideas of how to set up the laptop users so they can have access to the internet any of the five locations without having to reconfigure the WSP Client?

Do all of the servers have the same name. If so, you can just point the Proxy settings on the client machine to "\\server" and that should do the trick. I have a similar setup on a cable network... If not you might be able to setup a lmhosts file pointing to all of the Proxy servers...
There should be a file on your hd called "lmhosts.sam" that will give you more details on how to make a lmhosts file...

All the servers have different names and IP addresses. I found a solution using Netswitcher for $9. It allow me to set up multiple configurations. All the user needs to do is select the location and Netswitcher reconfigures automatically. Thanks for the feedback!

See the other post for a way around this.
The Trick is to make sure that the users know which address or name they are going to use at each locaton.
Tools/Internet Options/Connections/ Lan Settings.. Put a check in the use a proxy server line and go to advanced. The have them enter the address to the local proxy server..
It may be a bit of a challenge for a novice user, but with practice they will get the hang of it.

Thanks but as I stated I need an easier way then having the users reconfigure their Proxy Client every time they switch from using the Network Internet access to Dial-up access. The users are novices and they are very lazy. Thus it's on my end to make it as simple as possible for them.
