Computer was being used w/charger for an extended period of time, computer was then shut off,but hung at the it is safe to turn of computer,it finished the process after staying on a long period in this state.

The next day the system would not power up.

Any ideas as to what went wrong here.

Unfortunaly this kind of problem can't be solved over the phone

Make sure the user is powering the laptop with both the mains and battery connected.

This is one of those that you have to make the best logical guess unless you have all replacements to test.
Let?s face it. The core components of NB to boot are: Power, MB, CPU, RAM, and Video.
CPU, RAM, and video itself are out because the system should power up without them working.
Battery and AC Adaptor are out because the system would not have shut down problem the last time.
This leaves the MB.

Because the NB was purchased recently, it may be still under warranty and Dell should help to replace the bad part.

Thanks for your points,it is not the ideal way of troubleshooting this type of problem over the phone.
It was still under warrenty and this was posted to get ideas from others of what could have caused this problem

I've found a few times that removing and then re-seating the battery can fix problems like this. You may want to give it a try.
