    Laptop won’t boot . . .

    Locked

    by o1b_eb3 ·

A night ago, my bf was playing dota on my laptop and then i left it on for the whole night after he exitted the game. also i ran another full screen program & didn’t turn my laptop off because i accidentally fell asleep and the next morning when i woke up, it was still powered on. i thought it was on sleep or standby mode so i just pressed the power button to get it back on normal mode…however it was unresponsive..it didn’t even turn off when i held on the power button for a few seconds..i unplugged the charger to turn it off..(i normally run the laptop on ac power without the battery.) when i turned it on again, the power light was on but the fan wasn’t working and the BIOS didn’t even display on the screen. i can’t even turn it off by holding on the power button. i had to go out so i left it turned off at home for a bit and came back after 3h or so..& it still doesn’t boot..help 🙁

oh and the model is an acer aspire 5040 series..helpful feedback would be appreciated thanks!!

Where was the NB located at the time?

If it was on a surface that allowed the air intakes to become blocked like something covered with material or the like then the most likely thing is that the CPU got really hot and as the protection circuitry cut in to protect it the components on the M’Board over heated an died as a direct result of the excess heat.

Or you could have had a severs Power Surge overnight while the NB was unattended and this has damaged the M’Board in it.

Either way you have a faulty M’Board as the most likely candidate here so depending on how important this particular NB is to you, you can take it in to be repaired or buy a new NB and fit the existing HDD from the Acer to an external USB Caddy and recover your data from there.

Though if you had your personal account Password protected you’ll need to Take Ownership of the files by following the directions here

If you where using any form of Data Encryption you’ll also need to save the Encryption Key or you’ll loose all your data and you can do that by following the directions here

      http://tinyurl.com/orpmf

Even if you have the unit repaired you should still backup all your data as many places will just wipe the HDD and install a clean Install of Windows without a second though so it’s really a good idea to remove th HDD fit it to a USB Caddy and save everything that you think that you may need.
