Wonder what the instructions in the manual were.

In any case, boot from startup disk and type "sys C:" and reboot. See if that helps.

I agree with what answer 2 in what happened, which is sometihng changed the drive geometry. If you've ever had someone change your bios setting for the HD from say LBA to LARGE, and the settings read different, this kind of error will be generated.

I'm not sure what you're manual is teling you, but usually the restore CDs can boot on their own, so try that withou a diskette.

IF you're using the diskette meant for restoring, and the CD-Rom isn't going at all, I would suspect something is wrong with IDE controllers on the laptop, and it'll probobly be best to send it back to HP for repair.

If the problem is the mbr(master boot record)you can restore it by typing at the a:\prompt fdisk /mbr and when that is finished type sys c:
this will rebuild the master boot record and then transfer the system files to the hdd

hope this helps

HEllo buster your machine is infected by a virus and it already erased your windows ssytem files and come com files too i too faced this problem with toshiba notebook and finally found out it was a virus. So you need to go for a clean install operating system.
