large capacity hard drives.

By jdold52 ·
I have a question concerning large capacity hard drives, specifically, Western Digital 200GB drives. I have a user at work who installed two of these drives in a Dell Dimension 4XX PC to be used as a server. He partitioned the drives with Partition Magic. He says that after about a month or so, both drives mysteriously lost one of the partitions. Dell PC has latest bios. Ran diagnostics on drives, no errors. Any ideas? Thanks.

Call Dell and see if that particular PC supports these large hard drives. The Pc may not be compatible with these customized drives.

What version of Windows?

Only XP SP1 and Server 2003 have built-in support for drives larger than 132GB!

If an older version of Windows, Partition Magic on it's own may not be enough.
You may need to use Western Digital's Data Lifeguard Tools to setup the drives with a BIOS overlay.
