Large downloads

By karansoin ·
I was downloading a trial graghics suite from corel. It is about 190 MB. During this after about 75 % download was through, a message that the connection with server was reset the download cannot be completed. On starting the download again it starts from beginning. In my previous downloads sometimes the download re starts from the point it was interruptede. Is there a setting in the os that has to be checked. My OS is Windows XP. Please help! Starting the download from scratch with no surety that it would complete, makes me write for help.

There are several options available to you here generally speaking this happens when a certain amount of time goes by without any activity on the Line so the Browser cuts the connection. You can up the time allowed before it times out but a better option would be to use something like Download Accelerator Plus that is a free utility from

http://www.speedbit.com/

there are quite a few other programs available that do the same thing but DAP seems to be the fastest and retains the already downloaded data longer. I know what you are going through as it used to drive me nuts trying to download DVD ISO's where you would get to less than 1 MEG left to download and the connection would drop out and when you logged back in you would be starting from the beginning again.

IE is supposed to hold any downloaded data for 10 minutes but from experience I've found this doesn't often happen and even if it does you tend to get dropped off again before the download completes at which point you loose everything.

With DAP you can restart a Download from where it dropped out provided that you are not downloading more than one item at the time, but when you run a Spy ware Application over the computer DAP will show up as Spy ware because it allows adds to appear on the screen so do not allow the Spy ware program to delete it from your system. Another option is Fresh Download available at

http://www.freshdevices.com/

Both work quite well.

The corel download page specifically says to disable other download managers. Doesnt windows support a resume facility?

Hi

It is possible so tell I.E. to clear all it's cache (where temporary files are stored) each time it exits. If you go to Tools>Internet Options and then click the Advanced tab you will see an entry called something like 'delete all temporary files after exit' - make sure this is not checked and try your download again.

There are also other programs that allow you to configure this setting - have you installed and used any 'tweaking' programs? If you have, check them and make sure the setting is to leave all temporary/offline content intact.

Good luck
