Learning Programming....???

By carquiza ·
The big question here is I am an average man who wants to learn programming there are so many languages to learn....? Just to think of it you are already confused of what to choose....?...Is there someone on the internet using only one general language...on computer....can this some other languages be eliminated and concentrate on one is it possible....or impossible. Hope this make sense. Tired of learning many programs I am about to start but I guest people are all different so as the programs. Any comment please is appreciated.

Mel, I would suggest you familiarise yourself with structured programming concepts. There are a number of paradigms - Imperative (C, Pascal), Object Oriented (VB, C++), Functional (Miranda), Parallel (Ocham), etc out there and you have to decide which one(s) you are interested in.

I studied software engineering at University and found that, once you fully understand the concept of syntax and semantics in one paradigm , you will pick other languages up much more easily.

Try looking for texts on structured programming.

Good luck

Hi Malcolm,
As a programmer this is really great to learn. Thanks for your answer, will it be possible that someday you will be also writing your own progamming language to become an expert.

If I had to start all over again, I would probably choose Python as my starter language. It is an interpreted language with a mature set of support libraries. It is free, allows you to learn Object-Oriented programming from the start and performs well. When you want to move on, it interfaces into Java very well. Java would be my second language. C# in turn has very much in common with Java so you can be part of the .NET craze if you choose.

Hi User Deleted,
This is a snake Python.....but I know very few people use this language how many are there using this language. C# will be more I think because of Visual Basic.NET. Need more info and Thanks for your answer.

Do you want to learn about web page design (programming for presentation) or use an actual programming language (programming to build an application)?

Your choice is not mutually exclusive, but I would suggest that you go down one path and cross over where (and when) you want to.

Do some research on the Web and locate some online classes...

If you are good with math or logical thinking, go for Java or C# (they are almost the same).
If you aren't, go for VB, VB.NET is the newest, and pretty powerful.
And if you have problem with math + logical stuff, don't go into programming.

If you are good enough, you can write your own programming language. It's hard, but it is possible. However, making other programmers learn and use your programming language would be much more harder :-).
About everyone using the same programming language, I don't think it is possible right now (I don't know what will happen in the future). You want to write your own language, and other want to write theirs. Also, companies want to make money from selling their programming language. Many languages have been developped, and forgotten that way. However, thanks to that, we have better and better language.
Don't worry about there are a lot of language with different syntax. Once you become expert in one, it will be a lot easy to pick up other languages.

If yo go to the basics the rest are simple, checked out assembly or machine ? They are the basics and are exactly what all others grew out of ! And if you have problems with the other languages you could actually fix them!
