Leaving a job mid-project

For various reasons I would like to move on from my present employer. However, we have just begin a project for which I’m the project lead, and I am concerned about the ramifications on my career of leaving mid-project.

First, what kind of project is it.
Second, are you worried that your present employer will give you a bad reference, or are you worried that it doesn’t look good to the new employer?
Third, there may be ways you can leave specific instructions with those left to complete the project to a)insure it is done right or b)you can satisfy the old boss that you aren’t just dumping it off on others and c)you can tell your new employer that you have left detailed instructions at your old place of work,and if possible, have made yourself available for helping them make the transition to your leaving.

Thank you very much.
1. The project is Web service w/VB apps for data maint., & to push video to projectors.
2. Yes I’m worried about bad ref. and particularly about future reputation.
3. Yes I would leave instr. Great suggestion – I can do that,and this approach allays my concern a lot.
